How my wrong experience was actually just right University of Manchester Careers Blog
How my wrong experience was actually just right University of Manchester Careers Blog Its not uncommon to meet dejected-looking students coming to The Careers Service filled with anxiety that they dont have relevant experience or the right experience to put on their CVs in order to apply for jobs in their final year. If this is a concern you share too then fear not it can be easily remedied. And not by changing your experience, but by changing your attitude towards experience itself. Whether you tended a desk at a large international organisation or served beautifully-crafted cups of espresso to caffeine-starved customers over summer, any kind of work experience provides valuable transferable skills and experience which you can use in interviews and on your CV. (You might remember that Bryony demonstrated this with her job as a birthday part host in a post last week.) During the summers of my penultimate and final years at University, I worked as a Brassiere Team Member (waiter) at a 5-star hotel, a job that despite the hotels glamorous façade was hectic and highly demanding. I would spend eight hours a day striding around a heaving restaurant, catering to the finical appetites of guests and the ever urgent requests of temperamental chefs. My responsibilities included tending the bar, taking orders and delivering them to tables, greeting and seating guests and customers, and laboriously cleaning and resetting the restaurant three times a day. A far cry from my sedentary life of education, where exertion came from pushing my pen across a page or prying open the pages of a hefty book! That being said, waiting did require a significant amount of learning the correct way to address a table, carry a tray, make the perfect coffee, not to mention memorising a vast array of fine dining and wine menus, including the minutiae of each dish (because no sa ne person knows off-hand what cavolo nero is). As challenging and tiring as this job was, it did provide me with skills and experience that I have used time and time again in interviews and on my CV to impress employers, including The Careers Service. For starters, working in a busy restaurant necessitates teamwork to ensure guests receive a flawless dining experience. I have referenced in interviews the constant communication that I maintained with my team during services, enabling me to delegate responsibilities and also manage my time between tasks so that I could assist colleagues when they were struggling with the relentless onslaught of demanding customers. And there you have your order of teamwork, served up with a side of time management two skills essential in almost any profession. Customer service in action! The main selling point of waiting experience, however, is customer service. Most jobs involve interaction with customers in one way or another, and being able to demonstrate that you can build a rapport with customers (or even assuage their fury and offer satisfactory resolutions to their problems) is universally valuable experience. In interviews I have waxed lyrical about the times I charmed customers into purchasing bottles rather than glasses of wine, or placated a diner who had a meltdown over the excess of chilli in his linguine so that he left with a smile on his face and only the hint of a fire in his belly. Ultimately, situations may be different but your skills are transferable. The secret is being able to recognise and articulate your experience in terms of their component parts: the task, your actions, how you overcame any obstacles, and what you learnt from this situation. (Get help identifying transferable skills on our website.) Demonstrating that you gained these insights from your experience is far more important to employers than the name of the organisation you worked for and what your job title was specifically. Fixed or Growth - Why Your Mindset Matters - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Fixed or Growth - Why Your Mindset Matters - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Whatâs your mindset? Is it fixed? Is it growth? Why your Mindset Matters Everyone has a mindset. Thatâs a given. However, not everyoneâs mindset helps them achieve, strive and accomplish all that they are capable of on a regular basis. I recently finished Carol S. Dweckâs book âMindsetâ â" which coincidentally is on Bill Gateâs list of favorite books of 2015. In her book she covers a lot of ground related to success and failure in relation to sports, business and personal relationships. Effectively there are two mindsets to be considered. In the Fixed Mindset people take on a âwoe is meâ and âblame everyone and everything else ⦠except meâ mentality. In the Growth Mindset people take on a more Zen mentality where everything happens for a reason and can be a learning lesson. As you can guess the Growth Mindset is much more conducive to success and being able to push on even when it seems all forces are against you. By adopting and embracing a Growth Mindset you can stand out in your career. Fixed Mindset Traits: Feeling labeled a failure Getting discouraged when something doesnât play out the way you expected Passing on a chance to learn Do you retreat when a challenge seems daunting? If yes, you might have a Fixed Mindset. Growth Mindset Traits: Takes on a challenge Learns from mistakes and failures Continues on ⦠perseveres Do you take failures as an opportunity learn? If yes, you might have a Growth Mindset. There are a few more aspects to each mindset, but these are some of the key traits. Obviously, the idea is to embrace a Growth Mindset in order to keep moving forward. Is is always possible to have a growth mindset? Iâm not 100% sure. Being human will have down days, but people with a growth mindset will seek to turn those down days into learning experiments. I think there will always be optimists. Call them dreamers if you like. Optimists are those people that sometimes drive us crazy because they canât realize that what they are proposing will NEVER work. Then they go off and do the impossible. Which reminds me of what Eleanor Roosevelt said ⦠The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. ~ Eleanor Roosevelt Seek a Growth Mindset When you can take on a growth mindset mode of thinking you will be able to see things in a new light and be able to approach problems from a new perspective. A few things you can do today to begin developing your Growth Mindset: Look for the issues and dig into them Break them down Seek to understand what you can learn, take away and improve upon This does not mean you will always be successful at every endeavor. This is not a case for advocating âparticipation ribbonsâ rather it is a chance to take control of your experiences. Take control of the way you react to conditions and actions that may have been thrust upon you. You cannot control what happens to you, but you can control your attitude toward what happens to you, and in that, you will be mastering change rather than allowing it to master you. ~ Brian Tracy Failure is an Action When you can fully accept that Failure is an Action ⦠NOT an Identity you will be at least one step ahead of the game. The point of this statement is that Failures Happen. They do not define you. They are not your identity. An Action Does Not Equal Your Identity A few things you can do today to begin breaking away from a Fixed Mindset: Instead of seeking to blame someone or something ⦠look for the underlying issues Before giving up take a step back and try to look at the bigger picture. Work Harder. Yes, this might seem counter-intuitive and may fly in your face as an insult. Itâs not. Thatâs your Fixed Mindset thinking. Ive missed more than 9000 shots in my career. Ive lost almost 300 games. 26 times And that is why I succeed. ~ Michael Jordan Fixed or Growth? There sort of is a wrong answer here. A fixed mindset will only serve to drag you down and to reconfirm your fixed mindset convictions that you arenât good enough, fast enough, smart enough. Donât let that mindset control you. Take control of your situation. Take control of the way you react respond to the things that impact your life and I can assure you that your results will continue to improve. Will it happen overnight? Not likely. However, in a step by step fashion you will start to see changes in the way you perceive and react to situations. As you being to do this and find initial successes your peers will also likely begin to take notice. As this happens more and more you will Stand Out in Your Career. Remember ⦠âEverything is theoretically impossible, until it is done.â ~ Robert A. Heinlein

Design Thinking Process Education For Teams - Algrim.co
Design Thinking Process Education For Teams - Algrim.co In this article Iâd like to cover a brief summary of what design thinking is, get you up to speed with the process and then discuss active ways you as a leader or contributor can put process and exercises into place which flexes the muscles of your engineering, product and design teams in way that will lead to better outcomes. Design thinking, as a process, is simply about empathizing, planning, prototyping and executing against a problem set. As you could probably tell from that simplification, this covers a lot of ground when you think about your software development teams and how they are interacting with each other. This is a unified way that engineers look at their problem sets, large and small. And also how designers look at it. So our focal point today will be on the visual representation of this effect and what outcomes happen from it. Design Thinking can be captured as follows: Design Thinking is a design methodology that provides a solution-based approach to solving problems. Itâs extremely useful in tackling complex problems that are ill-defined or unknown, by understanding the human needs involved, by re-framing the problem in human-centric ways, by creating many ideas in brainstorming sessions, and by adopting a hands-on approach in prototyping and testing. Understanding these five stages of Design Thinking will empower anyone to apply the Design Thinking methods in order to solve complex problems that occur around us â" in our companies, in our countries, and even on the scale of our planet. This is sourced from the Interaction Design Foundation, who does a fantastic job of planting our feet firmly on the ground when thinking about this mental practice. Let's dig into the stages a little bit more so you have a good grasp of them. Interaction Design Foundation puts Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test as the main areas of focus. Empathize means to have a firm understanding of your problem set. This can be from a human level or any maybe even from a technological level. It is about relating to the problem firmly, before concluding a potential solution. I like to think of this step as research. Define means to firmly document what that emphatic path has led you to. The foundation for which we can reference the various paths or situations of which a user or human might be presented with. I like to think of this step as what you do with research. Ideate means to brainstorm practical solutions to what problem set or design issue weâre faced with. This is a key part of the design thinking process, to make sure weâre thinking about what ideas might address friction. This can be large or small, in my personal opinion. Prototype is quite literally as it sounds. The process of which we build a working, functional model of our product, engineering, and design collaborations together. This allows us to benchmark our ideate phase against something tangible. Test is also pretty self-explanatory. It shows us that we want to be sure we are setting a place for which we understand the problem exists and putting in a function that we can test the outcomes are either positive or negative. Without testing, it will be unclear that weâve been able to successfully emphasize with our core audience. This entire process is usually quite iterative. They donât normally work without each other. For instance, I wouldnât recommend jumping from ideate to prototype without first going through the empathize process. It's helpful if you clearly document each one of these steps with your thinking so that you can later alter one portion of the process and then clean up how the other parts of the process are affected. As you can probably tell by now, this is a fantastic team building tool. So let's talk about how this can be used as a way to build your software development teams into positions where they can better execute their work in the future. Meaning, we will be training them. For me, this is the best way to start design thinking as a process for teams. By going through hypothetical scenarios, either large or small, and seeing how the team works together to propose their own paths and get to outcomes. The first recommendation I have is what you might call a hack week. Something where you are providing a week of downtime to address training. The work being done will most likely never go into a production state. In fact, I would urge you to attempt to address a market and category that the team does not know about. We want to this to be hypothetical. And be clear this a creative exercise for learning. Once you have that, you must train your team about the design thinking process. It's not very difficult to comprehend but more of a difficult skill to learn both doing more frequently as well as doing at various phases of a company or products lifespan. Set the tone of the scenario. Tell the team that each person must come to the table with their hypothetical documentation on each of the design thinking process points of interest. For the prototype phase, if you donât have any engineers who are working on this, paper sketches or drawings should suffice. Weâre really trying to get to the thought process here, not the output. In your scenario setting, put a problem, a market/category, a persona or audience, and the desired outcome into place. Your desired outcome should be the end result. The thing that you want the customer or the user to experience. Next, provide ample time to go through the process together. Break the process into multiple days and workshops. From a design perspective, we want to give ample time for each person to draw their own conclusions and document them for sharing later. If you can dedicate one day to each part of the process, at the very last day there should be a lot of time left for presentation. If running a larger headcount software company, where directors of product design or other roles might exist, try to put them into small groups. Again, it's our hypothetical role-playing efforts here that will really exercise the design thinking muscle. As you can probably tell by now, what weâre doing is providing freedom, flexibility and ultimately putting role reversal in the mix. We want each team member to be part of something they may not have been part of before. This way in the future the engineer can better relate to the designer. Or the designer can better relate to the product marketer. This is our ideal outcome as an exercise. For you, a leader of a software development organization, you know by now that every person comes to the table with a different set of experiences. They may have a clearly defined discipline with their focus of work. But we want to give them the opportunity to break that so they can empathize with their fellow employeeâs. This will then educate each person about what steps might be ahead of them in their product development agile cycles or simply how to communicate about managing expectations better. Iâd highly recommend one week each year dedicated to this hypothetical role-playing exercise. And I hope this framework gives you some basis to generate your own path for how the team will do this.

9 Tips to Conquer the Fear and Anxiety CareerMetis.com
9 Tips to Conquer the Fear and Anxietyâ" CareerMetis.com This digital era has vehemently eroded peopleâs ability to connect with each other. Many of us have been convinced to keep mouth shut; better not to speak at all than speaking. This is because we donât have self-confidence.Almost all of us are living the life for others and making zero efforts to improve our own and this is what has left us wildly insecure, full of self-doubt and confusions. The only solution to this intricate puzzle is confidence and self-belief. Both of them are not innate qualities, much effort, and hard work is required to acquire both. evalIf you are one of the few willing to acquire extreme self-confidence and want to eliminate chronic worry and anxiety, you need to start helping yourself. Here is a list of few sure-fire ways which will help you flourish in personal and professional life by conquering the fear and anxiety.1) If you want a different life, you need to behave differentlyevalâSuccess is not something that happens to you, itâs something that happens because of you and the actions you take.â Seek problem, come up with solutions â" donât avoid them.Ability to solve problems gives one a distinct advantage over others and open up the path towards success. Dumping your work on someone else might affect personal integrity. There is a common cliche that the world gives givers and takes from takers. So, seek a reputation as âproblem solverâ.4) Surround Yourself with Positive InfluencersIf it does not add to your success then subtract from it.It is a generally accepted phenomenon that oneâs mood is contagious. Feelings are transferable from one person to another. One possible secret to long term happiness is surrounding oneself with positive influencers. It is really unwise to hang around negative people and expect positive results. If environment, people, media or behavior prevents you from evolving into a better version of yourself then cut them from your life.eval5) Avoid Over ThinkingevalImagine the worst thing th at can happen without exaggerating end results. Though it is panicking or may bring the heart attack but think what would happen next enable you to face the fear of failure. There is a common cliche that fear will run away when you chase it. Confront fearful thoughts without being scared of getting trapped is really hard but this will help you a lot.Imagining the worst without making your brain a host of negative imagination can lessen the fear of failure, remove the burden of responsibility and give the courage to deal with the upcoming challenges.6) Donât Ever Try To Be PerfectIn order to be perfect, it is necessary to accept your imperfections. It is good to be perfect in one field rather than becoming the jerk of all traits and master of none.Life is full of stresses and it is common if you are facing bad behaviors someday or mood swings. Bad days and setbacks always happen because life is messy and we all have to encounter everyday challenges.7) Donât Try To Please People ar ound YouIt is necessary to edify, educate and fulfill your own dreams to please yourself rather than pleasing others. Literally, it is impossible to please everyone around you because people are different in nature if someone tries hard to do that they start depleting themselves which ultimately vanished the sense of happiness and fulfillment from their life. There is always light at the other end of the tunnel. You only need to stop pleasing people around you and start making efforts to make your dreams come true. The only thing that matters is doing the right things with a good heart.8) Fake It Till You Make ItPeople with a deep desire to change or improve something can do it with little effort and great determination. When you are overcoming the fear and anxiety it is necessary to feel confident or at least pretend to be confident. Fake that behavior with conviction to get there eventually the power of habit will kick in.evalTake a moment, close your eyes and imagine a place where can feel happiness. Visualize success as much as possible because this will help you to prepare yourself for walking on a preordained path.9) Positive AttitudeA positive attitude is something that yields positive outcomes. Expand your horizons and see the great pictures of the possibilities ahead of you. Positive approach towards and the everyday challenges has deep effects and it encourages people to acquire new skills and expertise without the fear of losing.FINAL WORDSIt seems crazy but letâs celebrates the success of others because life is a journey not a competition and everyone is running their own race. Paying attention to your personal growth is pretty crucial. Once you start putting a value upon yourself, rest assured that the world will not raise your price.Last but not least, my humble advice to you is:âKeep your fears to yourself, but share your courage with others.ââ" Robert Louis Stevensoneval
