How to ask for a job referral, and the template you should use
How to ask for a job referral, and the template you should useHow to ask for a job referral, and the template you should useThere are a million ways to mess up when you ask someone for a referral for a job or for someone else - especially if you dont know how well the two people know each other. Heres what to keep in mind.Be sure to hold their attentionHannah Morgan, an author, speaker and founder of Career Sherpa, writes in U.S. News World Report about reaching out cold via email. As a last-ditch effort to try and make contact with someone who works inside a company, you may resolve to sending a message to someone you dont know at all. If you are lucky enough to find their email, use that, otherwise, youll have to send a message through LinkedIn. Its important that your message hits the strangers radar so be sure to use an attention-grabbing subject line and engaging first sentence. Also make sure you reference something you both have in common such as college, LinkedIn groups or o utside interests.Do the heavy lifting for themThis could make things easier.Anum Hussain, cofounder of personal news assistantAcciyo, a former growth marketer at HubSpot and co-author of Twitter for Dummies, wrote about asking for a referral on HubSpots website. She mentions that she wanted to get in hauch with someone, and upon seeing on LinkedIn that the person went to the same school as one of her colleagues, she asked that connection for a referral.Hussain goes on to mention that the issue is peoples lack of time, but that the solution is to write the introduction yourself. As mentioned, most people dont want to waste any of their already precious time. So when I asked Andy for the referral, I was sure to write the bare bones of the introduction myself. That way, Andy could customize it without having to start from scratch, she writes, before providing an example.Give them an outAlison Doyle, a career expert, author and founder and CEO of CareerToolBelt.com, writes about this in T he Balance. The problem can be what they are going say. Rather, ask Do you feel you know my work well enough to refer me for a job at your company? or Do you feel you could give me a referral? That way, your referrer has an out if they are not comfortable providing a referral for you and you can be assured that those who say yes will be enthusiastic about your performance and will write a positive letter or give you a strong endorsement,Heres a sample script to use for your next referral requestFeel free to follow this template, which is roughly based on the tips aboveHello person youre contacting,Hope youre doing well at X company.I appreciate your time, so Ill keep it short. Im looking to get in contact with X at X company.I just saw that you have X in common with them, and was wondering if you would be interested in connecting the two of us for X reason, if you know them well enough. To make things easier for you, Ive already written out a basic sample script, just in case youre on board- but if not, I understand.Looking forward to hearing from you,Your name here

Bad bosses usually think theyre awesome
Bad bosses usually think theyre awesomeBad bosses usually think theyre awesomeWhen you enter the meeting, your palms are sweaty. Your nerves have really got the best of you this time- what if you give your presentation, and as soon as he hears about your vision for this project, everything goes up in flames as he rips your confidence into shreds? You almost feel like theres no point in bringing up the fact that his treatment isnt fair, because as everyone knows, his word is law. You think,Who am I to communicate to the person who hired me that theyve crossed the line.Take comfort yes, you do have a terrible boss. But your boss doesnt know hes terrible. He (or she) thinks he is absolutely awesome.Dont believe it? Well, its science.Terrible leaders get that way by being paid too muchIts all about self-perception. Overconfident leaders tend to think highly of their own leadership, which is why they demand large pay packages and have trouble believing that things may not be working out.A highly-paid CEO may actually hurt a business, according to 2013 researchby researchers from the University of Cambridge and Purdue University.High pay, in other words, does not guarantee that a leader will turn in strong performance, as measured by a companys stock price. In fact, its quite the opposite the higher paid a leader, the mora likely the company will suffer under his leadership.Firms that pay their CEOs in the top ten percent of excess pay earn negative widernatrlich returns over the next three years, the researchers found. Why? Because higher pay tends to make people believe theyre right. If they were always wrong, the thinking goes, they wouldnt be paid so much, right? So the leaders tend to splash out on big, expensive plans that eventually lose money. The findings seemed to be driven by high-pay induced CEO overconfidence that leads to shareholder wealth losses from activities such as overinvestment and value-destroying mergers and acquisitions, the article said.Overcon fidence hurts leaders and the companies they runTheStanford Graduate School of Businessand the Wharton School looked at overconfidence in leaders, as measured by their investment decisions.Overconfident leaders invariably think that companies will 100% improve under their leadership. How do we know that? Because as soon as they take over a company, they gather more and more stock and have trouble letting it go.CEOs who are overly convinced about their own leadership capabilities are not actively trying to get rich at shareholders expense theyre just misperceiving the situation, saidUlrike Malmendier, an assistant professor of finance at Stanford Graduate School of Business and a co-author on the study.Using data on the CEOs of 477 Fortune 500 companies from 1980-1994, the researchers tracked CEO overconfidence by studying the tendency of a CEO to overly invest in his or her own company by habitually buying its stock or by holding on to stock options long beyond the point when they s hould be exercised, according to the Stanford Graduate School of Business. The study found that a typical CEO will invest 19% of available marginal cash flow in investment projectsbut an overconfident one will invest 36%, according to the Stanford Graduate School of Business.Malmendiertold the institutionthat overconfidence can sometimes be good for leaders to have. The role of narcissismStill, arrogance in management is rarely benign. It couldput a company in danger.A 2012 study on CEO narcissism and fraud found that narcissistic CEOs behave unethically to obtain their goals and satisfy their constant need for praise and admiration. Highly narcissistic CEOs may achieve greatness for their companies. However if left uncontrolled, too much narcissism may result in unethical behavior and jeopardize the interests of their companies. The bottom line you may think its obvious that your boss is terrible, but he or she has no idea thats the case. How to handle a badeanstalt bossThere are some good ways to handle bad bosses, whatever their failings. Daily Worth has a nice roundup.Heres some advice we like, too.Dont handle a really bad boss at all. If your boss is bad enough - abusive, disrespectful, disparaging - then get a transfer or a new job. The more time you spend in an abusive work situation, the more likely you will burn out and hurt your career progression for years. Abusive bosses are bad for your physical health.Learn how to manage up. Its rare to have a perfect boss, so everyone needs strategies for managing bosses. We like this grouping of advice, which includes everything from talking it out to learning how to rise above the drama.Try to figure out whether the terrible behavior is temporary or a personality feature. Bosses are humans too and go through rough times. If you feel your boss isnt being effective, try to figure out whether its a brief blip that will pass or something that seems more permanent. If its the latter, its worth flagging it to the boss himself.Learn how to get information in a non-confrontational way. No one likes hearing that theyre screwing up. Instead of freaking out and demanding answers, or lobbing accusations, think more diplomatically. There may be factors you dont know in your bosss decisions. Questions are effective ways to present ideas while getting more information and context I saw the latest initiative and I have a question about it. Do you have five minutes to clarify the impact on future operations?Collect lessons for the future. Many excellent managers became that way by learning what not to do from their own bad bosses. Observe what is ineffective about the leaders around you and think about how you can improve on that style in the future.

How to Establish Sales Quotas for Your Team
How to Establish Sales Quotas for Your TeamHow to Establish Sales Quotas for Your TeamA quota or sales goal is a platzdeckchen number of sales or an overall value of sales that a salesperson is expected to meet over a given period of time. Nearly all companies set quotas for their salespeople because the practice both ensures that a salesperson knows what is expected of him and because its an easy way to determine what commissions are due to that salesperson. Quotas Can Vary Greatly From Company to Company Although quotas are widespread in the sales industry, they take various forms and can vary quite a bit from company to company. A small business with just a handful of salespeople and one or two products will often set a very simple quota system. The goal might be for each salesperson to sell $100,000 worth of products per calendar quarter. A large company with thousands of sales reps and many different products or services to offer might set a very complex quota made up of dif ferent targets for different products. A salesperson might be expected to move 100 units of product A, 50 units of service B, and $1,000 worth of add-on services such as warranties. Goals Can Differ Based on Perceived Potential In the case of a large company with offices spread out over a wide geographic area, the goals for each office or location will probably differ based on its perceived potential. In other words, an office that traditionally makes a lot of sales and has lots of market potential will have higher goals for its salespeople than one in an area with fewer potential customers. Time Periods Can Vary Quotas can be set for time periods ranging from a week to a year, but quarterly quotas are the most common. A quarterly period gives salespeople plenty of time to align their sales strategies to their goals and set a sales plan into motion. Quarterly quotas can also allow companies to take product seasonality into consideration. If a particular product sells much be tter in summer months than in the winter, then the company might have a higher quota in Q3 than in Q4 and make mora revenue without putting too much strain on its sales gruppe. Quotas Can Be Set Based on Historical Data Sales executives will usually set quotas based on historical data combined with projections of what they expect their industry will do in the near future. Unfortunately, even the best forecasting models can turn out to be far off from reality, especially when the marketplace undergoes sudden and unexpected changes. For example, a specific industry might berocked by a scandal, or new technology might make an existing product obsolete. In either case, the salespeople wouldnt have much of a chance of meeting their quotas because they were set without taking these factors into consideration. Sales managers might want to adjust their commissionpayouts to relieve some of the sales teams pain, always assuming that they clearly put in their best efforts and failed due to circumstances beyond their control. Commissions Are Usually Tied to Quotas Commissions are usually tied to quotas in some fashion. Sometimes its a simple correlation, such as 5 percent for every unit sold under quota and 10 percent after that quota is surpassed. In other cases, companies might set up commissions based on complicated mathematical calculations that factor in the salespersons performance in selling many different products. Generally speaking, tying sales commissions to the amount of revenue that a salesperson brings in is a good way to fairly compensatehimwhile keeping that compensation in line with how much money the company made from his efforts. How to Set a Quota Free calculators abound on the Internet, but if youd rather create a more personalized quota system or adjust the one youve been using, begin with your goals and existing performance. As a general rule of thumb, many sales experts say a quota is fair if about 80 percent of the salespeople can meet it during most quota periods. If less than 80 percent of the sales team is meeting quota most of the time, this indicates that it might not be realistic and the numbers should be adjusted downward. But if the entire team always meets or exceeds its quota, they might not be challenged enough and you might want to consider increasing the numbers upward. Just keep in mind that doing so without warning or explanation can be demoralizing for your sales force and might not achieve the result youre looking for, particularly if the change is significant. Consider meeting with your sales staff. What aretheirgoals? Timing Can Be Critical Consider seasonal lulls that arentrelated to sales when youre setting time frames. You can take other things into consideration if your business is on the small side. Do most of your employees take their vacations in the summer months because of the weather, not necessarily because your business experiences a lull at that time? You might want to adjust y our quota downward at these times rather than have your salespeople enter the time period already knowing- or at least believing- that they cant possibly meet a quota. Its all about psychology. How likely are they to put forth their best efforts if they go in already feeling doomed? Remember, your quota system does not have to be exactly the same every quarter or every month. You can raise goals or lower them from quota period to the next- just make sure you announce the temporary change loud and clear and explain why youre doing it so no one is surprised by a skimpier-than-expected paycheck. That wont help good will. Another idea is to set specific performance goals with rewards that match their achievement once or twice a year when you know your staff is probably scrambling for cash, such as at the holiday season. Now sit back and monitor your results, making adjustments as necessary.

The quickest way to rebound from failure according to science
The quickest way to rebound from failure according to scienceThe quickest way to rebound from failure according to scienceYou dont need a scientific study to tell you that messing up at work is a zero-fun hell spiral. But science can help us understand how to respond to our mistakes so we can learn from what happened and kick ass the next time around. And, it turns out, popular advice like sucking it up may not be the best route to go.A recent study published in the Journal of Behavioral Decision Making found that people who allowed themselves a brief wallowing period - even to the point of self-pity - after failing at a task were more successful in the future compared to those who tried to rationalize and move on immediately from what happened. In the first experiment, people were asked to search online for the cheapest blender they could find, with the possibility of winning a $50 cash prize. Unbeknownst to those involved, the experiment was designed for everyone to fail. After est ablishing baseline failure, researchers asked participants to write down how they felt about losing. Some were instructed to focus on their emotions - and experienced thoughts like, Ugh, I cant believe I did that, I dont want to feel like this ever again, and I didnt do my best. Others were asked to think cognitively (logically) about their failure, for example, This wasnt important and I wouldnt have won anyway.Process your emotionsFor the second experiment, participants were given a budget and asked to search online for a book to buy a friend while scientists measured how many minutes they spent looking. We found that the people whod focused on their emotional responses spent nearly 25 percent more time searching for a low-priced book than those who only reflected cognitively on their failure, says co-author Selin A. Malkoc, associate professor of marketing at Ohio State University. Why would acknowledging feelings about failure and even throwing a pity party motivate someone to tr y harder in the future? Its true that we should rationalize mistakes to a degree - otherwise wed go crazy beating ourselves up - but when we stop to process our emotions, our innate ability to be resourceful and change kicks in.Neuroscience studies show that when we feel strongly enough about something, the brain tags it and when a similar situation arises in the future, we draw from that emotion to find solutions, says Malkoc. For example, if a part was bit by a dog in the past, fear and pain would surface every time they saw a similar dog. And, more importantly, the person might alter her behavior based on the emotional thoughts stored in their brain.Learn from your mistakesPerhaps blenders and online shopping dont seem precisely relevant to office life, but Malkoc and her team view their findings as closely related to the workplace, a space where performance is constantly being assessed by supervisors. Its especially applicable to employees who want to learn from their mistakes , says Malkoc. In that case, its best to pause and let your mistake sink in.So next text time you screw up at work, give yourself permission to acknowledge how bad it feels, sit quietly with those emotions for a bit - but not too long Malkoc advises ruminating for five minutes, max. Thats long enough before the defense mechanisms kick in.This post originally appeared on Shondaland.com.

In Praise of Thinkers (Not Doers)
In Praise of Thinkers (Not Doers) It starts with a really terrible picture spreading like a bad cold around LinkedIn. This picture, in particular.Like most viral content, its oversimplified, didactic, and supposedly funny. Ittaps into the zeitgeist, gainingstrength (and shares) by simply confirming the things people already believe to be true. It, more than any other viral picture in recent memory, bothers me to no end.The katechese of this little cartoon is clearthe thinker is a lazy intellectualwho sits around all day the doer why, hes outdoingthings, accomplishing goals, changing the world, selling his startup for gobs of money, dating supermodels, etc., etc.Be the doer, not the thinker. The doer embodies what The New Statesman calls the modern cult of spontaneity, thepervasive school of thought that fetishizes fast action, instinct, and reflex and shunsthose who take the time to think things th rough. The cult of spontaneity takes some of its cues from the anti-intellectual movements which have long plagued the American population(Isaac Asimov once said, The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge). The cultis also obsessed withauthenticity, a vaguely defined buzzword that gets thrown around in everyday life as often as big data and disrupt get thrown around by well-meaning tech companies. Per Steven Pooles aforementioned article in the New Statesman we have a ordnungsprinzip 1 brain that delivers snap, intuitive judgements through unconscious processing, and a System 2 brain that does the slow, cold reasoning. Now, which of those brains is the spontaneous one? Why, System 1, of course, the blinking, unthinking brain, the site of hot cognition. The weirdly anti-rational weather of our age, indeed, in sists that this intuitive System 1 is who we really are. Because our rationality can be infected with errors by System 1 biases, or so this story goes, we should give up all hope of being reliably rational.Doers Are Just OlderChildrenWeve established why this cartoon is so virally successful it oversimplifies the world (youre either a thinker or a doer) it carries an easily digestedmessage(be the doer, not the thinker) it taps into the zeitgeist (spontaneous actiongood Thinking bad) and its supposed to be funny (I think?).Now, lets establish why this drawingbothers me so much. Its not the oversimplification (though, I do dislikethat). Its not thecondescending didactic manner of the cartoon (but, yes, I do dislikethat, too). Its not even the reinforcement of puerile pop culture myths or the total lack of humor (as you probably guessed already, I dislike those things as well). No, what really bothers me is how patently wrong this cartoon is. You dont want to be a doer. You want to be a thinker. You want to takethe time to plan, reason, and investigate before you do anything at all. This leads to better results when youdofinally act.You know who thinks before they act? Michael Phelps. As Danielle Schlanger explains at Business Insider, Olympic swimmer and14-time gold medalistMichael Phelps reviewsevery possible scenariothat could occur during a race before he even gets in the water. Schlanger also mentions Captain Sully Sullenberger, famous for landing his disabled tuch in the Hudson River, saving the lives of everyone on board. Its a good thing Capt. Sullenberger decided to think things through, rather thaninstinctively heading for the nearest airport.Heck, even fruit flies think before they act.You know who doesnt think before they act? Children. Do you know why children dont think before they act? Because they cannot comprehend the consequences of their actions, think about future events, or realistically gauge how other people view their actions.Children liter ally lack thehardware to do this. The neural network responsible for these behaviors is not fully developed until 13 years of age. But, sure, lets throw away the complex and powerful capacities our brains develop over time. Lets revert to the childish way of behaving.Dont think Just doUnless, of course, youd like to be successful. Ill take the example of Michael Phelps over that of the neighbor kids any day.

Do You Make These Career Fair Mistakes
Do You Make These Career Fair MistakesDo You Make These Career Fair MistakesThe line was so long that it could have been mistaken for Black Friday at one of Americas favorite retailers. Instead of shoppers the hallway was filled with well-dressed jobseekers nervously shifting back and forth on their feet while silently practicing their elevator pitches. At exactly 8 a.m. the doors opened and several thousand people crossed the convention center floor, well on their way to new jobs. The career ritterlich had begun.Whether youre a soon-to-be graduate or an experienced employee in need of a change, career fairs can be a valuable tool in your job search. Career fairs are an excellent way to efficiently connect with a large number of fhigkeit employers. Theyre relatively low cost, and they get you in front of companies outside your geographic area. Career fairs also may help you discover new or smaller organizations. Best of all, most companies at the fair are actively looking to hire fro m the people that they meet.Remember that career fair from the top of the article? When it was all said and done, several hundred people received offer letters. Not bad for a few hours in your fancy clothes. If you have the chance to participate in a career fair, definitely do it. Dust off your resume, pop in a breath mint and get ready to put your best foot forward. As you prepare for your next fair, you can increase your chances of getting an interview by avoiding these common mistakes1. Wearing uncomfortable shoesThis sounds like such a simple thing, but trust me it has been the downfall of many talented job seekers. For some cruel reason, career fair planners rarely schedule these events in comfy rooms with soft, squishy carpets. Instead you will find yourself walking and standing for hours on unforgiving, hard floors with few available seats. When your feet hurt, it can change your posture, your nonverbal behaviors and your demeanor, all of which can make you seem less friendly or interested to an employer. You still have to be professional, but this is leid the time to choose form over function when it comes to footwear.2. Ignoring opportunities to be included in resume books or databasesMost career fairs have a resume book or online database where job seekers can submit resumes in advance. The process can be frustrating because it may require you to reformat your resume to fit certain standards or cut and paste key areas into a database template. This extra work is definitely worth it. If you are attending a career fair that allows onsite interviews, most candidates are chosen and contacted before the event even begins. Only a small percentage of interview slots are held for extraordinary candidates that stop by the booths. It is much easier to get noticed beforehand than to be one of several hundred eager faces standing in line. Even if there are no onsite interviews, your resume can generate interest for months after the career fair. 3. Talking to tire d representatives at the end of their shiftsA few hours of shaking hands and passing resumes can make anyone a bit cranky. Now imagine that youre the recruiter with long lines of people clamoring to get your attention, each one of them earnestly trying to sell themselves. There comes a point of fatigue where even Superman would have a hard time breaking through. Make it easy on yourself and visit your top employers when the representatives are likely to be at their highest energy levels. Every company will have a schedule for its employees, but youre most likely to find fresh representatives either at the very beginning of the day or after lunch. Avoid approaching booths right before lunch or at the very end of the fair.4. Believing that youre speaking to the hiring managerYou did it You had a great conversation with the representative. You were witty, competent and confident, and the interviewer was impressed with you. As you turn to walk away (giving yourself a mental high-five), you miss the fact that the representative drops your resume into a pile with no additional notes or thoughts. In most situations, the recruiter is the gatekeeper, not the hiring manager. Your conversation is important so that your resume isnt discarded. However, after the career fair your resume, along with many others, will be dumped unceremoniously on the hiring managers desk. No part of your amazing conversation will be conveyed. If there is something that you want the hiring manager to know, research the job online, apply for it, attach a cover letter referencing your amazing conversation with the representative- whom you should mention by name- and send it to the company along with your resume.5. Grabbing table giveaways without speaking to representativesOne of the best parts about a career fair is the swag. Depending on the industries participating in the event, it is not unusual for jobseekers to walk away loaded with pens, stress balls, snacks, post-it-notes and all types o f cool product samples. While I would never deny you the joys of treasure hunting, it is considered rude to grab armfuls of stuff without speaking to the representatives. Even if you arent interested in the company, it is critical to make a good impression because recruiters talk to each other more than you imagine. For many recruiters, career fairs are mini-reunions where they touch base with former colleagues, industry peers and college friends. A moment of greed at one booth could potentially tank your chances at another.6. Making private comments about companies in public placesPrivacy is dead. Well, at least at a career fair it is. If you have something disparaging, controversial or easily misinterpreted to say, you will want to wait until you get home. Every public space is potentially filled with company representatives poised to hear compromising information. 6 Salary Negotiation Tips for Hiring Managers
6 Salary Negotiation Tips for Hiring Managers6 Salary Negotiation Tips for Hiring ManagersYou have finally found your next great hire You pored over countless resumes, completed all the bewerbungsgesprchs, checked references and now its time for salary negotiation. You want to extend an offer that will be accepted. While the offer isnt only about the compensation package, it usually is the top concern of job seekers. Before beginning the salary negotiation, its important to have a clear understanding of both parties objectives. Your objective should be to negotiate a fair, market-based compensation package that is competitive based on the unique combination of skills that you require in this new employee, while being fiscally responsible to your company.Use our salary calculator to look up salary ranges for technology and IT jobs in your area.Your potential employees objective should also be to negotiate a fair, market-based compensation package based on their unique skills and experie nce. In the best case scenario, both parties desire the same outcome, a negotiation that results in a win-win. Here are six tipsConduct market research. Prior to your salary negotiation discussion, do your homework so your salary offer is based on actual market data. Review salaries posted on current online job postings as well as a reputable salary guide from an industry expert. This research is critical to your effectiveness and credibility in the salary negotiation process.Make adjustments if needed. Compensation in todays IT world can be dramatic. Starting salaries are changing rapidly, especially in many high demand disciplines such as mobility, cloud computing, big data, security, etc. If you find a material difference in your budgeted compensation package and what your research tells you, make adjustments if you can. Just because youve always paid $70,000 for a certain role, doesnt mean youll be able to continue to find the same level of talent at that salary. If you arent of fering competitive compensation, you may be left settling for your second or third choice for the role.Minimize surprises. Talk about compensation expectations early and often with the candidate. You want to know as soon as possible what the salary expectation is and how flexible they are when it comes to negotiating a fair starting package. Its not about negotiating in the first interview, but about understanding the candidates expectations so both parties save valuable time if the compensation gap is just too large to bridge. There is nothing more frustrating than spending hours together with both parties thinking theyve found the right fit only to have the deal fall apart at the end because you couldnt make the numbers work.Take emotion out of the equation. Negotiating can become personal and emotional. Resist the temptation to dig in your heels. Nothing can make a positive situation like extending a job offer turn south faster than an intense and frustrating conversation around starting salary. Remain calm and keep the conversation professional, while maintaining an open mind. Dont let pride or inflexibility prohibit you from getting the employee you wantMoney isnt everything. Starting compensation is always high on the list of reasons potential employees accept or decline a job offer. That said, there are many other factors to consider, especially if youre limited in the salary you can offer. Can you offer a flexible schedule, such as working four, 10-hour days with Fridays off, for example? Is telecommuting possible? Working from home can save employees valuable time and money (in commute costs). Options such as these may be just enough to tip the scales in your favor from a reluctant candidate.Never extend an offer you arent certain will be accepted. Offer acceptance should be a forgone conclusion when you get to this stage of the process. You want to be so thorough in the interview process that you are confident the candidate can do the job, wants the job and that the compensation aligns with their expectations. If you have questions or reservations, have those discussions with the prospective employee before making the formal offer. You can find salary information for more than 75 IT jobs in our Salary GuideDOWNLOAD THE SALARY GUIDEThis post has been updated to reflect more current information.

Subject Lines for Resignation Email Messages
Subject Lines for Resignation Email MessagesSubject Lines for Resignation Email MessagesWhen you resign from your job via email, its important to use a subject line that is very clear. That will help guarantee that your manager or teamberater opens your note. In an ideal world, you would send a resignation email two weeks before your planned last day with the company. But, if thats not the case, and you are givingno noticeorshort notice, its especially important that your manager opens and reads your resignation email message immediately. The right subject line ensures that your manager recognizes the importance of your email and reads it right away. landsee more information below on when its appropriate to resign over email, what to include in your note, and suggested subject lines for a resignation email. When You Need to Resign by Email If its at all possible, you shouldresign from your job in person. Try to make an appointment with your manager for a quiet, non-stressful time , and prepare what you want to say in advance. Givingtwo weeks noticebefore your departure is considered standard (and may well have been required by the terms of the employment contract you signed when you were initially hired). A timely, proactive face-to-face conversation with your boss helps leave him or her with a positive impression of you as an employee. There are, however, many reasons you mayprefer to resign via email. Even if you work remotely, its a good idea to try to speak on the phone with your manager about your resignation, but in some cases thats just not possible. There may be an uncomfortable situation at work, your supervisor may be reachable only by email, or you may need to give immediate notice. In that case, make sure your resignation email is as professional as possible. Review these email subject line examples, as well as the advice that follows on how to resign via email. Resignation Email Subject Line Examples SubjectResignation - Your NameSubjectNoti ce of Resignation - Your NameSubjectResignation Effective Immediately - Your NameSubjectResignation Date - Your NameSubjectResigning as of Date- Your NameSubjectPending Resignation - Your NameSubjectResignation Announcement - Your NameSubjectRetirement Announcement - Your Name Note that each of these examples (with the exception of the retirement email) uses the word resignation and your name. Thats intentional. With both these elements in the subject line, theres no question that your manager will miss the news - even if he or she receives hundreds of emails each day. What to Include in Your Message What you write in the body of your resignation email is important, too. Begin with aformal salutation, such as Dear Mr. Smith. Maintain a professional tone throughout, and resist the temptation to make negative comments, even if the reasons for your departure arent entirely positive. Remember that, if you have previously maintained a good rapport with your manager and your work per formance has been strong, he or she may be willing to serve as a reference for you in the future if you leave on a good note. Be sure to include your last date of work and briefly mention why you are resigning. If you have a negative reason for leaving, use a euphemism such as pursuing new opportunities. If you arent leaving immediately, its always good to offer to help with the transition, and/or to help train your replacement. To heighten the positive tone of your resignation announcement, express appreciation for the opportunity and the experience you gained while at the company, providing a few examples if possible. Use aprofessional closing, such as Sincerely, followed by your name and contact information. Remember that your email resignation will become part of your permanent record at the company. Make sure that it is polite, well-written, and free of grammatical and typographical errors. You should do what you can to make sure that all the paperwork in your HR file is profess ional and positive, from your initial application, cover letter, and resume, to your resignation letter. It is always in your best interest to leave a job on the best possible terms. You have no way of knowing when you might encounter former colleagues, or in what capacity. The last thing that you want to do is to give them reason to speak ill of you to potential or future employers. Review theseresignation dos and dontsfor tips on resigning properly. What DJ Khaled can teach you about winning at life
What DJ Khaled can teach you about winning at life What DJ Khaled can teach you about winning at life When it comes to looking up to people who have succeeded in their careers, many of them have had success in not just one genre but many in order to get to where they are. DJ Khaled is a perfect example of that as he is not only a fantastic DJ and rapper, but also an entrepreneur who has built his brand from the ground. Heâs also carved out a place for himself as something of a lifestyle guru: touted as the first âSnapchatâ celebrity, the Miami native and two-time Grammy nominee has developed a name for himself by endorsing positive behavior and introducing readers to âthe keysâ: a set of principles for life and career that are meant to help people rise above. Along the way, heâs worked with iconic superstars including Nicki Minaj, Drake, Nas, John Legend and, this week released a single with Beyonce and Jay-Z.DJ Khaled has taken the âkeysâ life and turned them into a book thatâs part memoir, part inspirational self-help manual. Named âThe Keys,â the book r ecounts early episodes of Khaledâs life, including sleeping in his car and hustling to carry music equipment to his own shows interspersed with current scenes from his mansion and garden in Miami, and the lessons he has drawn from the trip. The âkeysâ in the book are the lessons he has unlocked to becoming a self-made millionaire.Khaledâs approach is an inclusive one, rooted in a conviction that anyone can use the same tips to advancement. As he mentions. âEverything you see me do and say can be interpreted for any job, any age and any aspirationâ¦weâre in this together, and together I truly believe we can be great.âWith all of that said, here are the ten best pieces of career advice that DJ Khaled gives in âThe Keys.ââReject the naysayersâKhaled describes the people who are considered âtheyâ as the enemy in how you continue in life. âThe person who wants to distract you from your studies or your career with their drama? Thatâs a âtheyâ. That âs a big âtheyâ.âKhaled goes about the word âtheyâ as people who he thought were originally âhaters,â but go beyond that. They will get into your life, try to manipulate it and above all costs tell you that you wonât be enough. âThey donât want you to have stars on the roof of your Rolls Royce,â Khaled writes, evocatively, to show how âtheyâ donât want to see someone else winning at life. He recounts the âtheyâ he knew: he was told he wouldnât have a hip-hop album because he canât rap, or become something after being a high school dropout, but he did. A lot of this stems from, according to him, âpeople who canât elevate their own vision because they donât want to progress in the pursuit of prosperity.Instead of being inspired to new heights, they want to drag you down to their level.â It boils down to keeping the naysayers out of your life and focusing on bettering yourself and the people around you who supported you from the beginning.â We the BestâThis was probably the best piece of advice that I took from reading Khaledâs book, as confidence is a huge advantage when it comes to your professional self. It can be a tough thing to say âyes, I am the bestâ at something, but in his words, âyou have to speak your success into existence, because absolutely no one will do it for you.âEnvision something, like a dream board, and it will happen. Khaled asked to be referred to as âBilliâ because, and I quote, âIâm going to be a billionaire, so now I want you to greet me and call me Billi. This way everything will affirm and reaffirm my vision.â In other words, start talking and thinking of yourself as the person who has reached the goals you set: if you pay attention, it will keep you accountable, and it will keep you uplifted.âDonât Ever Play YourselfâSelf-sabotage is real, and we are often our own worst enemies. âDonât do anything foolish to compromise your joy and prosperity,â w arns Khaled. He relates a vivid anecdote of how he endangered his money and career: he drove repeatedly with a suspended license in Miami, where he kept getting ticket after ticket - each of which he laughed off. Finally a judge finally had enough and locked him up in jail for a night, which required bail and endless embarrassment. Sometimes, your confidence can grow so big that you forget that you arenât untouchable, and in this case, he definitely wasnât. He realized his hubris in not admitting when he made a mistake, and move on.The lesson: Stay away from the foolishness, pay attention to the road and and stay focused on what will truly better your career overall.âResilience: Weather the StormââThroughout oneâs career, they are going to have to ride the wave in terms of highs and lows of it, especially dealing with the lows.â Khaled discusses that the road to his success has been met with a ton of storms in the mixture of sunny days, but âto keep your head up a nd work through with your mind focused. Life is like school, you will be tested. The key is to pass it, and you have to do well on those tests over time in order to graduate.âThe tests for Khaled in this case ranged from everything that included having to sleep in his black Honda Civic when he moved permanently to Miami to having his own electricity in home shut off to pay his studio bills. But he has no regrets. âWhen I look back at my life, I wouldnât trade any storm in my path if I had to do it all over again. Every time I had to struggle, I learned how to avoid it the next time or how to get out of it faster.â When it comes to weathering the storm, Khaledâs key advice is simply âalways give it your best, no matter if you are up or down. Never surrender.ââStay HumbleâWhen you find yourself becoming successful in your own career, whether it is entertainment or something else, you can find that your ego can swell and you can become arrogant or cocky wi th how far along you are moving. Khaledâs key is no matter what, to always stay humble. He doesnât want you to mistake being humble as not confident. Heâs aware that he is the âgreatest to ever do it,â but that âbeing humble means being grateful for your blessings and remembering everyone who helped guide you to them.â Whether it is touring with Beyonce or being personally invited to the White House by former President Barack Obama, he claims that âIâm on a level of grateful that I canât even properly articulate. Itâs amazing.â Itâs a very interesting way to look at being humble when all it takes is the gratitude of others to get you there.âRespect the CodeâRespect the Code simply means âtreat people the way you want to be treated.â In career mode, it makes perfect sense as you can maintain some amazing relationships that can help guide you to bigger and better things.Be honest, be up-front and be yourself, and the other person will be as well. âWhen everybody respects the code and moves with a clean heart, everybody thrives.ââKeep Two Rooms Cooking at the Same TimeâWhen it comes to creativity, âdonât invest all your energy in one place. Itâs like financial investments- spread it around.â I love this key that Khaled discusses because it allows you to find as many rooms as possible to creating what you are hoping to achieve. Itâs all about keeping those juices flowing and understanding that your career is somewhat like a car, in that there is a ton of moving parts that need to keep it running.âFan LuvâFan Luv for DJ Khaled is always about giving back to his fans and the people that helped him get to where he is now. Itâs about appreciating who is around you, and letting them know how they helped you grow. You may not have fans screaming your name, but itâs likely you have mentors, supportive peers or others who cheer for your progress. Itâs true in the entertainment world and rin gs the same for people in any sort of industry.âInspire the Young WorldâAs you get older, a new generation of people are coming into the work world and are looking for someone to inspire them in some sort of way. For Khaled, it is about breaking the âcycleâ when it comes to uplifting the newer generations. âYouâve got old people mad at the new people, coming up on the Internet. Itâs always been a cycle, for hundreds of years, no matter what game you were in. Old and new always fight when innovation changes the way things are. This can be scary to people, but to me this just means the opportunities come faster and faster. I love the new era. Itâs all about perspective and itâs all about looking forward, not back.âIn other words, embrace the new, while still teaching your own ways on how you got there. It will get both generations much further in this path we call âwork life.ââDonât Deny the HeatââWhat do I mean by heat? I mean that co mbination of special magic that makes a hit. Itâs that rare energy that is unmistakable and undeniable. No matter where it comes from, if it comes, youâd better take it.âThe last and final key that I thought was worth mentioning is exactly this- if you have something that you think is really worth it in your career, run with it. This key encompasses all of the others to really get you where you need to go. Thatâs the beauty of your career- taking something you know can work, and watching it blossom.Bonus Key: âSecure the BagâAn important key that Khaled discusses in his book essentially is making sure that your finances are in order. Have money before you spend it, and remember that money is not just your path to freedom, but that it can also help you invest in further growth. Or in his words, âSometimes when you secure the bag, then you can secure a bigger bagâ¦itâs about having a down payment for the next investment.âMany big life decisions have a fi nancial aspect. Always make sure you are secure so that you can take advantage of opportunities to grow, or even start something new down the line. Then you can be, as DJ Khaled instructs, self-made.

ASME Presents New Bolting Specialist Qualification Program
ASME Presents New Bolting Specialist Qualification Program ASME Presents New Bolting Specialist Qualification Program ASME Presents New Bolting Specialist Qualification Program ASME has launched a new training program, the ASME Bolting Specialist Qualification Program, which is specifically developed to enhance a bolters ability to safely and effectively assemble and disassemble pressurized joints. Preventing gasket leaks in these types of joints is one of the single most effective ways to improve safety, reduce fugitive emissions, lower maintenance costs and shorten turnaround times during shutdowns. The key to achieving these improvements is enhancing the bolters understanding of both the functions and limits of bolts, gaskets and flanges and especially the importance of following formal tightening procedures. While welders have long had the training they need to prevent leaks, bolters now have the formal training they need, said Michael Ireland, associate executive director, Engineering. ASMEs new qualification program was developed by a group of bolting industry experts - with over 193 collective years of bolting experience - whose prime motivation is preventing bolted flange connection gasket leaks and who recognize the need for this training program. The new program, which incorporates online courses and hands-on training, will help participants understand and demonstrate the principles and practices of safe bolted joint assembly as outlined in Appendix A of ASME PCC-1: Guidelines for Pressure Boundary Bolted Flange Joint Assembly. They will also learn to apply these practices in the safe and effective assembly of bolted joints. The ASME Bolting Specialist Qualification Program consists of four online modules and a one-day hands-on training session. The online training portion of the program is designed to improve bolters knowledge of the principles and procedures of safe and effective bolting, as assessed by an online test following each module. The hands-on tool demonstration and testing portion of the program allows candidates to review, observe and demonstrate actual tool handling coupled with practical application of the principles and practices to show their ability to safely and effectively operate bolting tools and assemble functioning joints. Candidates will receive the ASME Certificate for the Qualified Bolting Specialist upon the successful completion of the online courses, the online final examination, and the hands-on training. While the program is intended to enhance participants familiarization with the general principles and best practices of bolted joint assembly, it is not a certification program. The determination of an individuals competency for assigned tasks and work remains the responsibility of his or her employer. For more information about the new ASME Bolting Specialist Qualification Program, visit http://go.asme.org/boltingspecialist.

If Your Writing Dont Agree, It Dont Look Good
If Your Writing Don't Agree, It Don't Look Good If Your Writing Don't Agree, It Don't Look Good Donât let these common errors brand you as unprofessional.Resume screeners can be very picky: they have that luxury. You want the job, and so do hundreds of other people. These busy professionals develop criteria to âdisqualifyâ some of the many potential employees/business partners. Itâs easy to knock out a candidate for lack of correctness (âAfter all, if s/he has an error in the cover letter, what worse mistakes will be made on the job?â).Hereâs a story to illustrate that point: A friend of mine provides professional services to irrigate golf courses. During a particularly busy year, he couldnât keep up with the amount of work he had, so he put one of his jobs out to bid. Only two proposals came in - one for $1.6 million and one for $1.8 million. Much to the surprise of everyone, he chose the $1.8 million dollar bid! Why? He discovered writing errors on the lower-priced submission, and didnât want to take the risk of working with anyone who was that careless. The lesson here is to make sure your written representation is correct and excellent. Itâs a buyerâs market. Have the goods that people canât pass up!One of the basic aspects of sentence structure is ensuring proper agreement between the subject and the verb. A singular subject uses a singular verb; a plural subject uses a plural verb. Loretta works here. (Singular) / Lorettaâs friends work here. (Plural) When parts of a subject are joined by or, or nor, the verb agrees with the nearer part. Either Loretta or Jim writes the weekly report. Singular indefinite pronouns use singular verbs. These pronouns include each, either, neither, -body, -one, and â"thing. The workers are very dedicated. Each does her/his job. For some indefinite pronouns, imagine adding âsingleâ to reinforce the pronounâs need for a singular verb, as in: every (single) one, some (single) body, any (single) thing, and no (single) one. Plural indefinite pronouns use plural verbs. These pronouns include several, few, both, and many. Several were eager to go further. And now, a tricky test: âSomeone left (her/his or their) laptop in the Board Room.â What would you choose as the correct answer?Itâs easy to make an error with this. Most people are tempted to go with âtheirâ (it sounds nonsexist to say it that way, but itâs grammatically incorrect). âSomeoneâ (literally, âsome single oneâ) is not a âthey.â Someone is singular, and always needs to be referred to with other singular words, like âs/he.â A great way to get around this problem is to avoid the pronoun use altogether: âSomeone left a laptop in the Board Room.â Of course, the best way to avoid problems is to know whatâs correct and to use it correctly!

These psychopathic traits help people make better financial decisions
These psychopathic traits help people make better financial decisions These psychopathic traits help people make better financial decisions Most would shy away from calling psychopathic traits desirable, yet a new study joins many others conducted in the past, that identifies how certain maniacal behaviors actually fund success in a lot of industries.Professors at Florida International University, Curtin University of Technology, Dalton State College, and North Carolina Central University authored a new report that explores the psychopathic tendencies most-frequently adopted by college students currently taking finance or economics courses. Further analysis showed that the very same characteristics that made the study pool particularly apt for these majors, dually made them efficient financial decision makers. The authors, locate the reasoning more directly, writing: âWe find that financial risk and time preferences have statistically significant associations with overall (global) psychopathy and its primary and secondary traits. We also find that higher levels of psychopathy, self-centered impulsivity and rebellious nonconformity are associated with more rational risk preferences in the form of more linear utility functions and lower levels of risk aversion.â A knack for risk-taking, coupled with the ability to make measured decisions under pressure, equal a prudent and well-reasoned capitalist. Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! After answering a series of questions, aimed to locate abnormal social traits, the studentsâ results were compared to the population at large. Here are the traits observed in the recent study: Self-centered impulsivity: The kind of actions committed exclusively on behalf of self-interest, with very little forethought applied. Fearless dominance: A penchant for controlling others, that is beholden to self-perception. Machiavellian egocentricity: This refers to a determined lack of empathy designed to complete objectives Rebellious nonconformity: Actively going against established social norms Blame Externalization: The refusal to take responsibility for oneâs actions Carefree non-planfulness: Allowing impulses to govern your decisions and actions Fearlessness: A consistent and irrational lack of fear Stress Immunity: When one is unperturbed by urgent pressures or âresilience to chaos.â Cold Heartedness: Lack of empathy All of these traits can be defined as psychopathic, though finance students did not express all of them consistently across the board. For example, generally speaking, finance and economics students, were more likely to plan for the future, in addition to taking responsibility for their actions more times than not, given these subjects tended to score low in non-planfulness, and blame externalization.Conversely, the majority of participants scored significantly higher in Machiavellian egocentricity, fearless dominance and social influence, stress immunity, and cold-heartedness, compared to the rest of the population. The studyâs authors reported the study pool to be âmore narcissistic and ruthless but have higher anticipatory anxiety concerning harm and willingness to participate in risky activities.âAs mention previously, these findings have been established many times in the last few years. Although true psychopaths only make up about 1% of the population, they are par ticularly prevalent in the corporate world. On the wealth of psychopaths in the job market, Lindsay Dodgson of Business Insider reports, âYouâre likely to find a lot of them in leadership positions because of their ruthlessness, charisma, and fearlessness. Theyâre very good at making snap decisions, but not so good at the empathetic professions like nursing or therapy.â Medical literature published over many years has observed actual functional and structural neurological differences in clinically diagnosed psychopaths.Specifically, differences in the parts of the brain the govern emotional regulation, fear, stress resilience, and financial decision making, have all been documented in a wide range of participants. The study reports, âFurthermore, amygdala hypoactivity results in a reduction of loss aversion during financial tasks Overall, these studies provide a biological explanation for the unique decisions made by psychopaths. Additionally, these studies explain why psychopathic traits are related to financial decision making.â You might also enjoy⦠New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklinâs daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Signs that an employee will quit appear 9 months before they do Signs that an employee will quit appear 9 months before they do The signs an employee is going to quit appear about nine months before they actually do, in the form of reduced engagement â" the level of interest an employee has in their work â" on various levels, a new study from employee-retention platform Peakon shows.Their data came from 33 million employee survey responses from 125 countries, including 36,000 from employees who actually quit an organization.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! The first sign that an employee is considering quitting came from a survey response about engagement: âHow likely is it you would recommend [Company Name] as a place to work?âAnother question, gauging loyalty, asked: âIf you were offered the same job at another organization, how likely is it that you would stay with [Company Name?]Loyalty on the declineFor the employees that quit, the engagement and loyalty scores rapidly declined started f rom nine months to the day they left.âLooking at all the graphs or trend lines of people who are leaving their work, thereâs a quite significant drop at the nine-month mark for a lot of the drivers that end of being the leading indicators, which is fairly consistent. Which is something we were surprised to see,â said Kasper Hulthin, Peakon Co-founder and Chief Growth Officer.Itâs falling engagement â" and whatever causes it â" that leads to employees slowly inching their way out the door, the study found. Their loyalty â" âa natural outcome of engagement,â the researchers wrote â" starts to decline as well. The other key issues also have to do with engagement as well. The factors that start to drop are: sense of accomplishment need to feel appropriately rewarded for their work the need to talk openly about pay with their managers, which is also important because it supports their self-worth a path for development In many cases, it came down to managers. People quit because they were unhappy with their managers (not because of their colleagues or because of company culture). This is exactly how much coffee Kelly Ripa drinks before her very long day This is exactly how much coffee Kelly Ripa drinks before her very long day It is one thing to get up in the morning, be half-asleep during your commute (hopefully you arenât driving) and then waddle into work and not speak to anyone (grunting suffices) until youâve had four cups of coffee. But what if your job literally required you to be perky in the morning? Well, thatâs exactly what Kelly Ripa has had to do for the last since 2001 when she became the co-host of the morning show staple Live! She is there to wake viewers up both in the audience and at home and get them pumped for their day. And she does it so well as she is beloved by audiences for her wit, sense of humor and boundless energy. So how does she do it? Does she just hook herself up to a coffee IV the minute she wakes up every morning (at 5:30 mind you)? Does she use a magic potion? Well, according to a revealing interview with The Cut, it is a little bit of both. After waking up at 5:30 or 6 Ripa says, âI make a âBullet Coffeeâ at home in the morning - itâs coffee, two shots of espresso and a tablespoon of ghee and then a packet of collagen powder.ââRyanâs [Seacrest] girlfriend got me hooked on it and I just sort of believe that if I drink it every day, my hair will be as thick as hers,â Ripa said. âThen I blend it all together and have this frosty thick beverage. I have a Starbucks latte when I get to Live. Then I will have a half a coffee after the show wraps.âWhy this combination of coffee? Itâs perfect for a long, jam-packed morning. Dave Asprey, Founder and CEO of Bulletproof, told Ladders âIf youâve been drinking Bulletproof Coffee for a while, you know the impact that it has on your energy levels and mental focus. Combining medium-chain triglycerides like our Brain Octane Oil with other liquids increases its fat-burning effects. Caffeine also increases your bodyâs ability to burn fat for energy, making coffee and Brain Octane Oil a formidable team. The fats from the grass-fed butter and Brain Octane Oil also slow the abs orption of the caffeine, giving you a gentler, steadier dose of energy throughout the morning.â â"No napsSo that is a lot of caffeine, but her day is hardly over after the taping wraps. Ripa serves as executive producer of the show now as well so the rest of her day is spent in production meetings. She also regularly exercises, keeping the 48-year-old is in tip-top physical shape. Her workout regime is a mixture of AKT (cardio-based dance), SoulCycle and running.âI was talking to a cardiologist and he said to make sure your heart beats out of your chest every day. The more you exercise, the healthier it is,ââ she told The Cut.But what is her other hack for keeping up her energy levels throughout the day? No naps. Though some studies show that a short power nap can help improve your productivity levels, that is not the case for Ripa.âI have a great energy level. I donât nap, and I fear that if I did nap it would probably make me stay awake all night,â she said.
